This was a competition entry for the 9/11 memorial.. Trees were planted around the site and the footprints of the two towers were dropped below grade. Within this lowered area, tall tree-like structures create an artificial forest. At the base, small cubes would hold artifacts from each victim, allowing for a more abstract, and more human, connection to the lives that were lost. As people walk the site, motion sensors track the movement and cause the "trees" to sway slightly as people pass. As the trees are topped with electric "luminaries", the activity is translated to street level, with an effect akin to wheat blowing in the wind during the day and a candle lit memorial at night. |

This entry balances two components, a virtual system accessible via the internet, interconnects stories from an informed citizenry. This network is represented in a physical sculpture of cell phone screens and undulating armatures for breaking news, the screens move together to form a collective message, which ratches into the front window, echoing a tradition of the adjacent Chicago Tribune newspaper. |

This was a competition entry for a modular house competition in Portland Oregon. The narrow lots were actually ideal for modular construction, allowing for short spans across the site. The solution included a series of options that permitted a range of exterior finishes, window assemblies, and even options such as car port vs enclosed garage. |
